Feeding the Homeless

Assalamu Alaykum,

We are planning to fulfill our duty as given to us by the Prophet Muhammed ﷺ, who said:

“‏ أَطْعِمُوا الْجَائِعَ، وَعُودُوا الْمَرِيضَ، وَفُكُّوا الْعَانِيَ”

“Feed the hungry, visit the sick and free captives (of war)”

(Al-Bukhari 5649)

Anas Ibn Malik (R.A) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“مَا آمَنَ بِي مَنْ بَاتَ شَبْعَانًا وَجَارُهُ جَائِعٌ إِلَى جَنْبِهِ وَهُوَ يَعْلَمُ بِهِ”

“He does not have faith in me who spends the night satiated while he knows that the neighbor to his side is hungry.”

(Al-Mu’jam Al-Kabir 751 - authenticated by Al-Albani)

The Prophet ﷺ praised the one who aided a poor person by stating:

"The one who looks after and works for a widow and for a poor person, is like a warrior fighting for Allah's Cause or like a person who fasts during the day and prays all the night."

(Al-Bukhari 6006)

Frequently Asked Questions:

  1. Who will this campaign benefit

This campaign will benefit the homeless people who are struggling to find food in the local area (East London).

2. Why should I support this cause?

This cause is dedicated to supporting those who require help in our local community. The Prophet ﷺ commanded us to help the poor and needy, going to the extent that one cannot be a satiated believer whilst his neighbour is hungry. This is the importance of helping those in our local community who are destitute or in need.

3. Are other causes not more worthy of support, why should I support this?

It is definitely true that there are many pressing issues in the world, we have embarked on this mission to fulfill the obligation given to us by Allah (SWT) and his messenger.

Allah (SWT) mentions repeatedly regarding the importance of giving charity and the Prophet ﷺ emphasised this and enforced this message.

One might say that “I will not support someone homeless” because ‘he chose to be homeless or is a drug addict’ (etc) but this methodology is flawed and un-Islamic.

The Qur’an is very clear that charity is given to 8 groups of people:

(Al-Qur’an 9:60)

These 8 groups are:

  1. The poor (al-fuqarâ’), meaning those in poverty or a pauper

  2. The needy (al-masâkîn), meaning someone who is in difficulty.

  3. Those tasked with collecting Zakah (on behalf of the state)

  4. Those whose hearts are to be reconciled, meaning new Muslims and friends of the Muslim community.

  5. Those in bondage (slaves and captives)

  6. The debt-ridden.

  7. In the cause of God.

  8. The wayfarer, meaning those who are stranded or traveling with few resources.

Allah (SWT) does not specify that the poor or needy must be Muslim or even pious, rather he states simply that the person in question is in difficulty, poverty or a pauper.

As mentioned previously, The Prophet ﷺ spoke about the importance of giving charity and helping those in need.

Throughout his life ﷺ he never turned away a beggar or someone poor and in need due to them being a sinner, an alcoholic or worse. Rather he gave them as much as he could and kept the bear minimum for himself.

Allah (SWT) will not hold you accountable if you donate some food or resources and they misuse it, you did your best to fulfill the commands of Allah (SWT) and his messenger ﷺ and you will be rewarded for this (If Allah wills), and they will be held accountable for their actions.

The duty of a believer is to have the correct intention and act accordingly, how the recipient acts with the charity is between him (or her) and Allah (SWT).
